Kayaking the Elkhorn Slough
The Elkhorn Slough is basically a wildlife wonderland of brackish water and you paddle right through the middle of it. Otters everywhere, seals popping up left and right, it feels like something out of a nature documentary, except you're in it! It’s located just north of Monterey in Moss Landing, where a Marina protects a wetland and wild bird habitat just next to the Slough. The kayaking is very easy; you paddle through the marina under an overpass, then go as far up the slough as you’d like to see beached seals, otters, and more. If the tide is low enough you might see some leopard sharks too swimming in the grasses!
Bring shoes you are ready to get wet, or full foot sandals like Chacos or Tevas. The Kayaking place will supply jackets and/or pants if you want to be waterproofed, but the weather is usually pretty good to let the sun soak you along with the water!
